Fire Chief – Charles HurleyChief Hurley is a 31 year fire service veteran who began his firefighting career just 14 days after graduation from High School in June of 1978. Chief Hurley served in the US Air Force as a Fire Protection Specialist as both active duty military and as a civilian from 1979 to 1989. Chief Hurley served the City of Las Vegas Fire Department from 1989 to 1999 as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Fire Training Officer and as an Acting Fire Captain. In July of 1999 Chief Hurley accepted the position of Assistant Fire Chief, Planning with the West Hartford (CT) Fire Department which he held until October of 2002 when he took over as Assistant Fire Chief of Operations until November of 2003. Chief Hurley worked for the City of Gilroy (CA) Fire Department as Division Chief of Training before joining the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Fire & Rescue Branch as Assistant Fire Chief, Special Operations Training in November of 2004 and was promoted to Deputy Chief of Special Operations in January 2006 until June of 2008 when he went to work with the City of Lincoln as a Fire Captain. Chief Hurley returned to OES in April 2009 and held the position as Deputy Chief of Hazardous Materials before accepting the position here in Oroville. Chief Hurley has also served his communities as a Flight Paramedic for Valley Hospital & Medical Center, a Search & Rescue Reserve Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, as a Master Instructor of Hazardous Materials for the International Association of Firefighters and as an instructor for fire science degree programs at the community college level since 1989.
Chief Hurley holds an A/S Degree in Fire Science and has three courses remaining for his B/S in Fire Administration. Chief Hurley has completed 13 courses through the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD and is a graduate of the National Staff & Command Course through the University of Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute. Chief Hurley is currently enrolled in the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program. Chief Hurley has been married to his wife Leslie for 22 years and they have three children and 1 grand child.

Along with the highly trained, motivated and dedicated men and women of the Oroville Fire Department we are here to protect and serve the citizens and the community from fire and all forms of emergencies and disasters. We are a full service organization and are available 24/7/365.
The mission of the Oroville Fire Department is to: Provide the highest level of service to our community by protecting and preserving life, property and the environment, while providing support, encouragement and motivation through the professional development of those within the organization.

As Fire Chief I have four basic rules for the department:
Respect: We will treat everyone we encounter with the utmost respect.
Accountability: We are accountable to the citizens through their elected representatives, we are accountable to each other and to all other departments in the city and our local business partners.
Be Safe: In order for us as firefighters to keep the citizens of Oroville safe we must first keep ourselves safe through physical fitness, a comprehensive training program that maintains basic firefighter knowledge, skills and abilities and challenges us to learn newer and better techniques in Firefighting. And by developing a health, wellness and safety program that ensures a long career and quality of life with our families.
