      The city of Oroville has joined with Butte College to provide a free service that provides one-on-one technical assistance to prospective small business owners and those currently owning small businesses.

      The Small Business Development Center is a national program that employs a team of professional counselors.

      The program originated through the U.S. Small Business Administration and the State of California. Butte, Glenn, and Tehama counties are all served by the local program. Services provided include financing, business planning, financial analysis, record keeping, marketing, and business management.

      Financing through the center includes securing bank loans, or in some cases grants through government programs. Business owners can secure financing for expansions, improvements, remodeling, and many other projects.

      The City of Oroville provides local office space for the program, participates in funding the service, and sponsors workshops and seminars for the program. Rico Cuneo is the Small Business Development Center liaison for Oroville. "Usually, start-up business owners know they need money, but they just aren’t quite sure how to put the information together for the bank, “explained Mr. Cuneo. "I help them do that, and if we work through the process together, we can usually get the loan approved at better terms than if the client walks in un-prepared".

      To further ensure success, the program offers a great deal of follow-up, meeting with the business owners for as long as it takes to work things out.
