Weed Abatement Information
The City of Oroville’s Code Enforcement Department addresses and enforces health and safety codes. It is critical that properties are maintained during the high fire months, usually from April through October.
To protect the health and safety of Oroville residents the Code enforcement department conducts inspections of properties within the city limits to ensure that properties are maintained and meet fire safety standards. All property owners of land within the City Limits of Oroville, CA are required to remove or destroy all grass, weeds, plants, rubbish or rubble prior to June 15th of each year.

How do I know if I’m in violation?
Parcels with weeds 4” inches or higher will be in violation and subject to a penalty plus all related costs of abatement. Weed Abatement of hazards by the city is not a service, rather it is to address an enforcement of safety issues. Parcels larger than 1 acre are required to have a 30-foot-wide perimeter of bare ground around the entire lot.
When is the deadline for weed abatement?
The deadline for mowing, disking and/or cleaning properties is June 15th of each year. If late spring rains occur, properties may need to be mowed or disked several times in order to comply with city standards.
My neighbor’s house or vacant property is possibly out of compliance. Can I report the status of this property?
Yes, please call the City of Oroville’s Code Enforcement Department at (530) 538-2498 or email to: Code@cityoforoville.org. The department appreciates help from the public to reduce threats. Complaints are received will be handled on a case by case. Remember, the primary condition that will be considered is whether the property poses a fire hazard and or is a nuisance.
There is debris and garbage on my property, and I didn’t put it there – why am I responsible?
If you are the property owner, then you are exclusively responsible for maintaining the condition of that property.
I no longer own the property, why was I sent a Weed Abatement Notice?
At times, our records may not always up to date. The Weed Abatement Notice is sent to the last known owner on the Butte County assessment roll. If you no longer own the property, please call the Code Enforcement Department at (530) 538-2498 or email to: Code@cityoforoville.org so property owner information can be updated.
Can I request an extension?
Yes, please call (530) 538-2498 or email to: Code@cityoforoville.org for requests, extensions will be considered on a case by case basis, if the parcel is not an immediate threat (fire hazard) to the surrounding area.
